Police And School Investigating Incident At Bourne Middle
In a joint statement Thursday night, Bourne Police Department and Bourne Public Schools alerted the public to an incident that occurred that day at Bourne Middle School.
According to the release, a Bourne Middle School student wrote “a small number of students’ names in a notebook along with a desire to damage a room in the school.” The school system and department began an immediate investigation, which is ongoing, according to the release. Once the investigation is complete, a determination regarding the student’s return to school and any relevant criminal charges will be made.
“We can relay that officers have conducted a home visit/search and found no weapons or indications of access to weapons from family or other sources,” the department’s Facebook post said. “The family is cooperating fully with the investigation and the parents/caregivers of all students named in the note have been notified.”
The department’s post reassured the community that both itself and the school system take these threats seriously, saying incidents such as this will always be seriously investigated and immediate actions will be taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. The school community will always be apprised of concerns that may impact the safety of students or faculty, but not all details pertaining to an incident may be released.
As a precautionary measure, there will be an increased police presence at the middle school throughout the day on Friday. Students, staff, and caregivers are encouraged to relay any information concerning threatening behavior to the School Resource Officers, school staff, or directly to the police department at 508-759-4451.
