BHS Girls' Volleyball Earns Team Academic Award

The upcoming season might not yet be underway, but the Bourne High School girls’ volleyball team has cause to celebrate anyway after team members earned the 2024 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award.

Announcement of the award was made on July 19. The Team Academic Award is awarded annually by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) to collegiate and high school varsity volleyball programs whose members maintain a year-long grade point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale) during the recently completed academic year. The award, the announcement said, demonstrates “each teammate’s dedication to classroom excellence during the volleyball season.”

In addition to the Team Academic Award, the BHS girls’ volleyball team received the distinction of AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll, given to teams representing the top 20 percent of team GPAs in each division.

This year’s award is sponsored by INTENT, which describes itself as a purpose-driven company that guides student-athletes toward both professional and personal success in “life after sport.”

“We are truly honored to receive this recognition, and this award serves as a testament to the support our faculty gives to our student-athletes to succeed both in the classroom and on the court,” Bourne schools superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou said in a statement from the district. “I extend my gratitude to the girls’ high school volleyball coach, David Moore, for motivating the team to strive for success and I commend our students for their ability to manage athletic and academic commitments.”

The Bourne High School girls’ volleyball team for the 2023-24 school year was composed of 12 members: sophomores Mackinley Scully, Lily Russell, Michaela Muldoon, Avery Morrill, Nola Timo and Sofia Halunen; juniors Hannah Petrillo, Tallulah Beane, Carley May and Reese Williams; and seniors Leah Barlow and Elena Timo.
