BMS Students Get K-9 Demonstration Mixed With History Lesson From Sheriff's Department

Students in Mark Ponte’s 7th grade history class at Bourne Middle School were treated to a K-9 demonstration by the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday.

In an email to the Enterprise, Mr. Ponte explained that his class curriculum focuses on early civilizations and includes how the domestication of the wolf to the dog was a “game-changer” for early humans.

“I wanted to show the students a firsthand account of how that relationship between humans and dogs is still going strong, thousands of years after the domestication process began,” Mr. Ponte wrote.

He got in touch with the sheriff’s department, which he said was more than eager to put on a demonstration for students. The demonstration focused on Sergeant. Jason Bernardo and his shepherd mix Nick, and Lieutenant Peter Benson and his German short-haired pointer named Ben.

“Not only were the students able to see history come to life,” Mr. Ponte wrote, “they were able to see our local heroes at work.”
