Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Will Be Held In Bourne

Bourne’s Department of Integrated Solid Waste Management will host a regional household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, October 22. Residents of Falmouth, Mashpee, Bourne, Sandwich and Joint Base Cape Cod are welcome to participate. Proof of residency is required; nonresidents are invited to participate for a fee.

The waste collection will run from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Bourne Landfill at 201 MacArthur Boulevard. Residents are encouraged to bring items that are too toxic for traditional trash pickup or dumping for disposal, including but not limited to pesticides, yard chemicals, auto or boat fluids, cleaners, disinfectants, pool chemicals, mercury products and paint or art supplies (as long as they do not contain latex or acrylic). More-specific information on what is and is not accepted can be found on the Town of Bourne ISWM webpage, under the 2022 hazardous household waste collection tab, or at www.loveyourlocalwater.com.

Regional hazardous waste collection days are intended to help protect the Cape’s local drinking water, which is supplied by an unconfined sole-source aquifer. By providing residents with education and opportunities for proper disposal, the cooperative hopes to keep the Cape’s water supply clean and free of toxins.

The program is organized by the Barnstable County Cape Cod Cooperative Extension’s Hazardous Waste and Water Quality Department, spearheaded by environmental and water quality specialist Kalliope Chute.

Paper shredding will also be offered again, but to Bourne residents only. A private shredding company will be available to collect sensitive paperwork that will then be shredded and recycled. Acceptance will be done on a first-come, first-served basis and will end when the vendor’s container has reached capacity. There is a three-box limit per person.

Additionally, the paint shed at the ISWM Residential Recycling Center will close for the season after normal hours of operation on Saturday, October 8.
