Bourne Students Observe Veterans Day With Annual Traditions
Bourne Intermediate School continued its annual tradition of honoring local veterans for Veterans Day last Thursday, November 10, through various school activities.
According to a press release from Bourne Public Schools, students in grades 3 through 5 partnered with “Mission: Thank Our Senior Veterans” to make thank-you cards that will be distributed to veterans to thank them for their service. The group’s mission is to collect cards for veterans around holidays, such as Veterans Day and Valentine’s Day, and to distribute them to veterans in local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Its Facebook page is run by a local woman.
In addition to making cards, students observed the holiday by placing more than 400 American flags in front of the school in a show of support and appreciation for veterans.
To start the day last Thursday, students participated in a breakfast with veterans and their family members to thank them in person and to learn more about their lives and service.
“We have a very deep and storied tradition of military service in Bourne, and our students have always done a terrific job recognizing veterans every year for Veterans Day,” Principal Jane Norton said. “On behalf of the BIS community, we thank our community’s veterans for all they have sacrificed on behalf of this country as well as the many staff members who helped honor the veterans as part of today’s events.”
