Bourne Bridge Work Wraps Ahead Of Schedule
Commuters rejoice: maintenance work on the Bourne Bridge is finally complete. The project wrapped up last Friday, November 3, more than two weeks ahead of what the US Army Corps of Engineers anticipated.
The Army Corps made an announcement last week that the contractor, R. Zoppo Construction of Stoughton, completed the waterproofing and paving portion of the project’s phase three late Thursday night.
Phase three involved sidewalk repairs and repairs to the structure and roadwork of the adjacent travel lanes, the Corps said. Lane striping was completed over the weekend, and all travel lanes and sidewalks are now open. All local restrictions on Cotuit Road/Maple Street and the closure of Veterans Way have been lifted, the Bourne Police Department said.
This time last month, construction was just entering phase two and commuters were bearing the brunt of the impact, which included extensive travel delays and widespread road congestion. Company owner David Zoppo said last month that the Corps gave work crews permission to be on site until Thanksgiving, but added that they had “no intention of being out there that long.”
The scope of the project involved mainly concrete and pavement repairs to the bridge roadway and deteriorated steel supports, maintenance of bridge joints, and repairs to the concrete abutment structures. Additional work was done on the bridge lighting and drainage systems.
