Bourne Police Issue Warning After Student Approached At Bus Stop

The Bourne Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred last Friday, June 9, involving a suspicious driver approaching a student.

A joint press release from the police department and Bourne Public Schools on Monday, June 12, said a student was approached at a bus stop after school last Friday by an unidentified man who offered the student a ride. The student did not get into the vehicle. The release did not specify which Bourne school the student attends, but it was made available to parents and the community.

According to the release, the incident occurred at approximately 3:35 PM last Friday in the area of Brady Road and Clapp Lane after the student had been dropped off by the bus. The vehicle has been identified as a maroon 2020-2023 Nissan Sentra driven by a older white male with gray hair who was wearing a plaid shirt.

There is no other information indicating criminal intent, but the department is attempting to identify the operator as part of its investigation.

The department and school district ask anyone with information about this incident (or who notices any suspicious activity along the bus routes moving forward) to call the police at 508-759-4420. Bourne police officers will reportedly have an increased presence along all bus routes for the remainder of the school year.

The release from Police Chief Brandon M. Esip and Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou included safety tips and recommended practices from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s KidSmartz program for parents to go over with their children. In general, the pamphlet advises that children be reminded to stay with a group, not approach vehicles without permission, and to walk away if a situation is making them feel uncomfortable.
