Canal Day Cancelled Due To Expected Impacts Of Hurricane Lee
Cape Cod Canal Day, scheduled for this Saturday, has been cancelled as forecasted storm conditions this weekend from Hurricane Lee grow more severe for the Cape Cod area.
The Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce made the announcement on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon, writing that it had "been getting messages and phone calls about this."
"After countless hours of watching weather forecasts, and getting advisement from local and state officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Cape Cod Canal Day," the post said.
This year's festival will not be rescheduled; Canal Day will return next September.
As of this writing, Hurricane Lee remains a “very large” Category 2 storm, downgraded from a Category 5 on last Friday. The storm is expected to impact the Southern New England area Friday night into Saturday.
The National Hurricane Center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued advisories for increasing winds and coastal flooding. Due to the large size of Hurricane Lee, the advisory said, hazardous conditions are expected to extend well away from the storm's center. Hurricane Lee is expected to make landfall between Maine and the eastern Canadian coast.
