BIS Principal Norton Announces Retirement

Bourne Intermediate School Principal Jane Norton has announced her retirement. Ms. Norton’s three-decades-long career will come to an end after the completion of the 2023-24 school year in June.

The announcement was shared in a news release from the school district on Monday, January 29.

“Mrs. Norton is a beloved educator who keeps the best interests of children at the heart of all that she does,” Bourne Public Schools Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou said in a statement. “She exudes Canalman pride and her legacy and impact will be felt for generations.”

After graduating from Bourne High School, Ms. Norton began her Bourne Public Schools teaching career in 1993. According to the district’s release, Ms. Norton first taught physical education at the high school and later was a health teacher at Bourne Middle School.

Before moving to Bourne Intermediate School in 2019, Ms. Norton served as principal at the Peebles Elementary School.

Throughout her 31-year career with Bourne Public Schools Ms. Norton also served as director of health and wellness for grades kindergarten to 12, administrator for the BPS Mentor/Mentee Program, and president of the Southeast Middle School Alliance, and as vice president and treasurer/membership chairwoman for the Bourne Educators Association.

The outgoing principal also played a role on the Bourne Middle School Opening Working Transition Committee, the news release said, which further informed her work on the Bourne Intermediate School project. Ms. Norton assisted a number of committees that focused on the vision for the school’s educational principles, design and construction. Since the school’s opening in 2019 she has worked at implementing new curricular offerings, programs and opportunities for students.

The superintendent’s office will begin searching for a new Bourne Intermediate School principal, the district’s statement said. Both staff and caregivers will provide input and be active participants during candidate site visits, and a search committee will be established to review résumés and interview applicants.

Information regarding the search for a new Bourne Intermediate School principal and opportunities for community participation will be shared as it becomes available, the district said.
