Fatal Crash Closes Sagamore Bridge Friday Night
The Sagamore Bridge was closed to southbound traffic for roughly five hours on Friday following a fatal car accident on Route 6 earlier that evening.
The accident reportedly occurred shortly after 7 PM on Friday, August 9, at the base of the Sagamore Bridge heading southbound. At least two vehicles were involved.
Massachusetts State Police confirmed that the accident was fatal just before 8 PM. It is not yet clear how many individuals were involved or injured in the crash, but early reports indicated that at least one person needed to be extricated from a vehicle. State police have said they are actively investigating the cause of the incident.
Shortly after 8 PM Bourne Police Department reported that officers were on scene to assist with traffic. Both of the Sagamore Bridge's southbound lanes and one northbound lane remained closed to traffic until around 12 AM on Saturday, August 10.
Local and state authorities issued public advisories to drivers traveling both on- and off-Cape to use caution and avoid speeding while on the road.
