Cape Cod Marathon Gives Away 200 Gallons Of Soup After Race Is Canceled

Following cancellation of the Cape Cod Marathon this weekend due to the storm, race organizers have come together to orchestrate a giveaway of the 200 gallons of various soups and 2,000 one-gallon bottles of water to anyone in the Falmouth community in need of a hot meal or water.

The soup was originally going to be for post-race festivities but after race director Jack Afarian learned the race would not be happening this weekend due to safety concerns, the decision was made to share it with the community.

“We were thinking, ‘Well we have 200 gallons of soup, what are we going to do with it?’” Mr. Afarian said, Thursday, October 28. “There’s the best clam chowder on the Cape here. Chef Steven Bird works at the Quarterdeck sometimes and The Pilot House. He makes the best soup. It’s all fresh ingredients and he starts making it like a week in advance. He just finished the chowder today.”

With power still being out all over town for the second day in a row, restaurants are mostly closed, and cooking is nearly impossible. Mr. Afarian and other organizers are happy to see the soup go to residents rather than go to waste now that the race has been canceled.

“At least we can give them a little bit of soup,” he said. “And it answered the question of what to do with all of our soup.”

The soup giveaway started at about 3 PM Thursday outside of the Gus Canty Community Center and will carry on for as long as it has to, Mr. Afarian said.

“Until we run out of soup,” he said.
