Falmouth Public Library Receives $525K Bequest
The Falmouth Public Library has received a charitable bequest of $525,000 from a longtime library patron and volunteer.
The funds come from the estate of Janice M. McWeeny, a Falmouth resident, and were accepted by the public library board of trustees at its January 11 meeting. At the meeting, library director Linda Collins recalled Ms. McWeeny as a happy, involved patron of the library and an avid reader who was a school librarian throughout her career.
The board has designated the funds to be used for long-range capital programs and projects relating to the library, but nothing specific has been determined.
Board chairwoman Judith L. Fenwick said the board has discussed using the funds for a renovation or rebuild of the East Falmouth branch, which looks to be the main focus of the board’s monthly meeting on March 8. Physical construction is quite a way down the pike—likely about five or six years from now, Ms. Fenwick said—but the board is considering more immediate improvements that can be made.
The East Falmouth branch was also the subject of a recent survey conducted by the library to gauge the community’s desire for improvements in service, such as extended hours, additional days and interior changes to increase accessibility and function.
