Bourne Schools To Offer Bus Transportation For School Choice Students
Bourne Superintendent of Schools Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou provided the school committee with an update on School Choice at its July 7 meeting.
Referencing updated numbers from that same day, Dr. Zhou reported that there are currently 108 School Choice students enrolled in the town’s public schools, which slightly surpasses last year’s numbers.
Eleven students are enrolled in Bournedale Elementary School, 18 in Bourne Intermediate School, 27 in Bourne Middle School and 52 in Bourne High School, with four students still pending decisions to attend Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School.
“We’re expecting the number to go up, that it will increase as the summer goes on,” Dr. Zhou said. “You’ll also see some different press releases and advertisements letting people know that we’re a School Choice district and that we have some really exceptional things to offer. With that said, we are also going to offer transportation to School Choice students with some parameters around that.”
Parameters include the requirement that School Choice students pay what Dr. Zhou called “a very nominal fee” for bus transportation, and that they join an existing bus stop, should there be room on that bus. No new bus stops will be created, Dr. Zhou said. She also added that the fee would be waived for students with significant needs, and details are still being worked out.
“We’re excited to be able to offer that to School Choice students who need it,” Dr. Zhou said.
