Old Burying Ground Restoration Contract Awarded

Slowly but surely, restoration efforts for the Old Burying Ground in Falmouth are coming together.

Edward Haddad, chairman of the Falmouth Historical Commission, has been spearheading the effort on behalf of the commission with member Tamsen George, who was appointed as an alternate representative to the initiative in February.

The first step of the project is to conduct an assessment of the cemetery. The contract for the assessment was recently awarded to cemetery conservator Donna Walcovy of Mashpee. Ms. Walcovy has previously done cemetery conservation work in Falmouth and on Cape Cod.

While there is no set start date for the assessment, it is expected that Ms. Walcovy will work with Mr. Haddad and Ms. George, as well as heads of the town department of public works, to identify and prioritize areas of the Old Burying Ground for restoration. Once the assessment is done, Mr. Haddad said, they will be able to apply for CPC funds to get the actual restoration work started.
